Nikon 16-35mm f4 G AF-S ED VR Lens

The Nikon 16-35mm f4 G AF-S ED VR Lens is the world's first ultra-wide angle zoom lens with VR for Nikon FX-format cameras. This 16-35mm f4 G lens offers an affordable and practical proposition for general photography with FX-format full-frame digital cameras. It is perfect for all types of wide angle shooting, including landscapes and interior architectural photography, where the constant f/4 aperture delivers consistent exposure at either end of the zoom range. The 16-35mm lens' complex optical design features Nikon’s exclusive anti-reflection Nano Crystal coat, two ED glass elements and no less than three aspherical glass elements. These sophisticated lens technologies help to minimize distortion and aberration and produce images with fine detail, good contrast and accurate colours across the frame, even at maximum aperture. Pros: sharp contrasty great range
Cons: still a tad pricey
"After much soul searching I have now done what I said to myself I would never do - sell my superb, glorious 14-24mm. You might ask why - well here is the why......
The 16-35mm is just a more useable optic. The 14-24, great though it was, had too short a range, was too vulnerable, and yes, it was a brick to carry around.
The 16-35 is a dream to use, its sharp its contrasty and it produces fabulous colourful images. It has all but replaced my 24-70 as a standard walk around lens. The addition of VR is as great for interiors as it is for those get in close grab shots in the outside world.
All in all, this has been one purchase that I will not regret. In fact this lens in combo with the 70-300 VR makes for an unbeatable set up (yes the 24-70 could be retired to the kit bag).
So buy it, use it, and enjoy it!"

"Having upgraded to a D700 (from a D300 and DX based lenses) I bought this over the 14mm Prime or 14-24 as I was worried about getting the front elements scratched on those lenses, and saving a few quid towards other lenses.
It is beautiful to use, fast responsive focussing whether on Auto or Manual, and I havent really had any issues about it only opening up to f4.
The barrelling is minimal in the extreme, and I can say I use this mostly for my landscapes and general usage... I love it.
However, on the first day out using it, someone told me they had been on sale for ~£850 mark at the Focus Imaging exhibition, and I paid £1044 here at WX (March 2010), and now I see its £899... so feel slightly like I should have waited... however I bought a 12-24 f4 AFS Nikon DX lens two years ago for £615 and now they retail at £806.. so the general proposition of investing in good glass still stands...

"Like a previous reviewer, I sold my Nikon 14-24mm to fund the purchase of the 16-35mm VRII. I haven't been disappointed. The sharpness of this lens easily matches the 14-24mm (when both stopped down) - but the niggle is the barrel distortion at 16mm. If you don't shoot architecture with this lens and include lots of straight lines in shot at 16mm - then the barrel distortion in real-world images isn't so noticeable. Despite that, it's a real versatile optic and is now my 'walk around' lens of choice. I also used to own the 17-35mm - but traded that up for the 14-24mm. I don't think there is much to chose between the 17-35mm and the 16-35mm VRII as regards IQ. So if you already own a 17-35mm then you won't be making a huge difference to your images by buying the 16-35mm. Highly recommended."

"I had the Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 and the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 lenses but in all honesty the Nikon 14-24mm was rarely used due its heavy weight and less useful zoom range. At 24mm its still pretty wide.
So the 17-35mm became the one I took with me for landscape photography. Its a very good lens - sharp and contrasty.
When the 16-35mm came out I decided to sell the other 2 lenses and just have this one. However for a week I had all 3 lenses and was able to compare them.
Now personally I'm not in to shooting brick walls so I shot the landscape at the bottom of my garden - which does have a few large gardens and houses in it.
At f8 - f11 - the f-stop I most commonly use - I really couldn't tell the difference between the 14-24mm and the 16-35mm. Both produced shots with sharpness from edge to edge - even in extreme corners. The 17-35mm is just as sharp in the centre and edges but goes very slightly mushy in extreme corners. Not a big deal really but does show how good the 16-35mm and 14-24mm lenses are. Overall the 14-24mm does seem to the sharper of the 3 lenses though not by a massive amount. The 17-35 and 16-35mm are very similar in sharpness except in extreme corners where the 16-35mm wins out.
A comparison at f4 / 24mm showed the 16-35mm outperformed the 17-35mm and got very close to the sharpness of the 14-24mm. I'd expected to see a lot of softness wide open so delighted to see it remained acceptably sharp even in the corners.
I also compared the 17-35mm and 16-35mm in terms of contrast and colours and the 16-35mm was a subtle but clear winner. It just looks more colourful. I couldn't measure it but when you flick between identical photos with identical settings the 16-35mm has a slightly more pleasing colour - punchier and somehow brighter despite both shots being identical and both f11 at 1/200 of a second. Again the differences are not massive.
With the extra 1mm at the wider end and having vibration reduction the 16-35mm is a clear winner for me. However if you already have the 17-35mm the difference is not so massive you need to rush out and buy the 16-35mm - in fact the differences are fairly subtle. Ok the 16-35mm has sharper extreme corners but honestly how important are the extreme corners to most photographs?
The only downside to the 16-35mm is its slightly longer in length than the 17-35mm. I can just about squeeze in my D700 + 17-35mm in a small camera case but the 16-35mm requires the larger case I normally use for my D700 + telephoto lens. Weight wise the 16-35mm is 50g lighter than the 17-35mm.
I suspect in real life photography the 16-35mm and 17-35mm are so close in sharpness and quality no one will tell the difference unless you do 10 foot by 20 foot posters and they look hard at the far corners! The 14-24mm is the sharper lens but again in most cases you won't tell the difference without close examination on high magnification. Its downside is weight and limited zoom range."

"bought this lens two weeks ago and it s dropped by £100 already ,I wish I had waited a bit longer ,as I could have bought a spare battery or two for my D700
with the savings .Still a Great Lens ,Distortion at 16mm
(lots of) Getting better at 20mm Long Lens Not much shorter than the 70-300mm Other than that a Great Lens ,sharp ,crisp images .Build quality Good

Pros: out of this world sharpness & contrast colour, build quality vr
Cons: barrel distortion @16mm and vignetting wide open @
"i sold my Nikkor 14-24 to buy this lens and i wasnt dissapointed . This is an Incredibly tac sharp lens , Its almost on par with the sharpness with my 14-24 f2.8 . There is noticable barrel distorion at the 16mm end , Which you dont get on the 14-24 and there is vignetting wide opoen @16mm but by 20mm its almost gone and thats with the vignetting control switched to high on the D3 body , the best thing about this lens is the contrast miles better than the 14-24 its almost velvia like quality what a superb lens that wont dissapoint"
