I've used this product for: less than a month
Expertise: Intermediate
Pros: sharp, clear contrasting images, great saturation, hood supplied, fast focussing, f2.8 across all focal lengths
Cons: zoom ring is a little stiff, vignette's very slightly with hood on
"What a fantastic lens. I was looking at replacing my 18-70 Sony kit lens and I looked at the Carl Zeiss 16-80, Sigma 18-70 and of course this lens.
I chose not to go for the Zeiss, because I have read some reviews that say this Tamron lens is just as good in respects of image quality, although it cannot compete with the focal lengths of the other two lenses the Tamron has a fixed aperture of f/2.8, which was definitely a deciding factor, the other being the price. I've had other Tamron lenses before, and the Sigma didn't look as well built as the Tamron. Ok, so it's plastic, but at £335 what else do you expect. The Zeiss is plastic at £500.
Great service from Warehouse Express as usual, the lens arrived well packaged in no time at all. I took the lens to a family bbq during these sunny May days we have been getting and came away with some brilliant images. The colour and saturation this lens captures is phenomenal. It's so vibrant yet completely natural. Focussing was fast, although it did very occasionally back focus. Image quality is second to none. I don't have many really expensive lenses to compare it to, but in terms of resolution, this lens gets the best from every pixel. In respect to sharpness, the Tamron is as sharp as a tack, even at f2.8. although I would advise stopping down as there is distortion and corner softness wide open. The transition between sharp and the out of focus background (bokeh) is very smooth even at smaller apertures depth of field is well balanced.
If you are like me and looking to upgrade your kit lens, this definitely one to consider. It may not have the extra reach of similar priced lenses, but it does not compromise in image quality, where the others would, due to distortion/pincushion etc."

"I'll keep this short. As a replacement for the 18-70 kit lens its a wonderful lens. yes its a bit short on the tele end, but its sharp through all focal lengths, and even at 2.8 wide open is nice and sharp although the depth of field is quite shallow.
I've had many many many perfectly sharp photos, much sharper than the kit lens"

"Ok, no doubt this lens has lived up to the hype on all of the forums. Did a whole load of research before committing to buy. It's sharp, fast and the image quality is second to none.
Now the Customer service received from Warehouse Express is the best I have ever experienced.
Ordered the lens at 15:50 (19/01/09) and it arrived this afternoon at 12:12 (20/01/09).
Hats off to Sean and Gemma who dealt with my order. Can't thank you guys enough.
A very satisfied customer to say the least :0)
Thanks again"
